Untranslated French letter. Andre (1869-1954, born in Lyon, France) was a Post-Impressionist painter. He worked in the textile industry, designing pattern for silk fabrics, before joining the Julian Academy in Paris, France in 1889. His first exhibit was in 1894 at the Salon des Indépendants, where he met and befriended Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Renoir introduced him to Paul Durand-Ruel, who helped to make Andre a success in the United States. Andre is especially associated with the Salon d'Automne, who he exhibited with from 1904 to 1944. Encapsulated in Mylar. Not matted in Gallery of History style. Items were not evaluated outside matte or encapsulation. "As is" matting purchase. Lightly toned. Letter is lightly creased. It's a two-page letter written in 1960 to Hollywood producer Barnett Glassman and may be in reference to a planned film, ultimately never made, on Luciano's life. Accompanied by a handwriting analysis of this letter. Exceedingly Rare ALS: "Charlie", 2 pages, separate sheets, 6x8¼. [Naples, Italy], August 26, 1960. To Barnett Glassman. In full: "Dear Barney, I want you to know that after you left, that party from Rome came to see me. I told him why you was looking for him, so I gave him one, now, if you should see him before you see me, there is only one hundred coming to him. My best to your wife. I would like to know if the lawyers are going to do something, in suing. Take care of yourself." Lightly creased. Nicked at lower edge. Folds, horizontal fold touches signature. BARNETT GLASSMAN was a Hollywood producer. In 1959, he met with Martin A. Gosch, an independent film producer, and they agreed in a deal to put together a film based on Luciano's life. This letter to movie producer Barney Glassman may be about Eboli ("that party from Rome") and the film based on Luciano's life. The reference to "lawyers" and "suing" may be a reference to the film not being made. In 1961, Luciano and Gosch reached another agreement. Instead of a film, there would be a book. Over the next ten months, Luciano told Gosch the story of his life. The Last Testament of Lucky Luciano by Martin A. Gosch and Richard Hammer was published by Little, Brown & Co. in 1974. THOMAS JEFFERSON Edward Church, Consul to Bilbao, Spain, was the first United States consul to be rejected by a foreign port. This historic 1790 document, signed by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, is Church's commission as United States Consul to Bilbao and the document that started the whole affair. Historic Manuscript LS: "Th: Jefferson" as Secretary of State, 1p, 7¼x8¼. New York, 1790 June 17. To Edward Church, Esq. In full: "Sir, The President of the United States desiring to avail the public of your services as Consul for the Port of Bilboa (sic, Bilbao), I have now the honor of enclosing you the Commission, and of expressing to you the sentiments of perfect esteem with which I am, Sir Your Most obedient and Most humble Servant". On June 4, 1790, in a letter to the U.S. Senate, President Washington nominated 14 Consuls and Vice-Consuls, including "Edward Church, of Massachusetts, to be Consul of the United States of America, for the port of Bilboa (sic, Bilbao), in the kingdom of Spain, and for such parts of the said kingdom as shall be nearer to the said port than to the residence of any other Consul or Vice-Consul of the United States, in the said kingdom." On June 7th, nine of the nominations were approved; Church's nomination was postponed. On June 17, 1790, the resolution "That the Senate do advise and consent to the appointment of Edward Church" passed. Milan, no date. Not fully translated. After confirming an earlier discussion, Puccini continues, in part: "About the artists, I can assure you that Burfio will be there. Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924), the greatest Italian opera composer of his time, wrote a number of operas, including his three most famous works, La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly, while living at Torre Del Lago, the home he had purchased in 1891. Please be advised that over 95% of all Original Movie Posters printed before the mid 1980's were issued FOLDED. This is NOT considered a defect. They were shipped to theaters this way. Slight fold separation on bottom edge at center vertical fold. Folded. Stars: Elvis Presley, Gig Young, Lola Albright. Director: Phil Karlson. When he completes his military service Walter Gulick returns to his birthplace, Cream Valley, New York. He was orphaned as an infant and grew up elsewhere but always wanted to return to where he was from. He hopes to be a mechanic but soon after his arrival finds himself working as a sparring partner at a boxing camp. Having lost all of his money in a crap game, Walter is happy to take any kind of work but a devastating right hook sends him down a different path.
